Veterinarians

Veterinarians diagnose, prevent and treat diseases, injuries and dysfunctions of animals. They may provide care to a wide range of animals or specialize in the treatment of a particular animal group or in a particular specialty area, or provide professional services to commercial firms producing biological and pharmaceutical products.

  Specialised veterinarians are professionals with a comprehensive scientific education. They have the authority to carry out, in an independent, ethical and personally responsible capacity, all aspects of veterinary medicine, in the interest of the health and welfare of animals and public health in accordance with national and international legislation. In addition they need a recognized qualification and/or experience in a specific species and/or veterinary procedure. They are responsible for national animal disease eradication programmes, the protection of public health and food or animal inspection, animal movements, and import and export of live animals and their products.

  Aquatic animal health professionals diagnose, prevent and treat diseases, injuries and dysfunctions of aquatic animals by implementing appropriate sampling protocols. They supervise the use of medicines, including vaccines, and collect data on fish health, making regular reports to the appropriate personnel. They may provide care to a wide range of aquatic animals or specialise  in the treatment of a particular group or in a particular speciality area. They may provide advice, support and training to farm staff on best practice with regard to the health and welfare of the cultured organisms.

  Animal chiropractors provide a therapeutic treatment following veterinary diagnosis or referral. They concentrate on spinal manipulation or manual therapy for animals in accordance with national legislation.

  Animal osteopaths provide a therapeutic treatment following veterinary diagnosis or referral. They concentrate on the application of treatment techniques using manipulation of the body tissues to resolve strain and injury in animals in accordance with national legislation.

  General veterinarians are professionals with a comprehensive scientific education. They have the authority to carry out, in an independent, ethical and personally responsible capacity, all aspects of veterinary medicine, in the interest of the health and welfare of animals and public health in accordance with national and international legislation. The generalist veterinarian can work with any species, however they may choose to work with a single species or types such as equine, companion or production animals.

  Duties

  • -동물 내·외부기관의 질병, 장애 및 상처를 검사, 진단, 치료하고 수술한다.
  • -동물의 분만을 돕는다.
  • -축산농가의 철저한 위생관리를 통해 질병을 예방하고 폐사되는 일이 없도록 방역업무를 한다.
  • -이와 관련하여 교육을 실시하고 검사를 수행하며 돼지 콜레라 및 광견병 등과 같은 전염병에 대한 예방접종을 실시한다.
  • -동물의 시체를 검사하여 사인을 규명하거나 수·출입되는 가축물과 고기, 계란, 우유, 어패류 등의 안전성을 검사하고 판정한다.
  • -동물보호 및 사육에 관하여 조언한다.
  • -가축의 품종개량 등에 대해 연구하고 개발한다.
  • -동물을 매개체로 인간에게 전염되는 질병에 관해 연구하고 예방 및 치료에 필요한 약품을 연구하고 개발한다.
  • -경마, 승마용 말을 대상으로 약품테스트나 신체검사를 수행하며, 부상당한 말을 치료한다.
  • -동물원과 야생환경에서 생활하는 야생동물을 관리하고 치료한다.
