- -다양하고 현실성 있는 소재 발굴을 위해 취재를 하거나, 다양한 사람들과의 접촉 등을 통하여 정보를 수집하고 창작에 반영한다.
- -소설의 줄거리나 등장인물을 결정하고 필요한 경우 역사적 배경이나 사건현장을 조사, 분석하여 작품에 반영한다.
- -등장인물의 성격, 줄거리의 전개, 심리묘사, 사회적 배경 등을 구상하여 작품을 쓴다.
- -신문사, 출판사, 문예지, 문학상, 인터넷을 통해 등단한다.
- -출판을 위해 저술하거나, 잡지 등의 정기간행물에 연재하기도 한다.
